Today,12 April 2011 fiftieth anniversary of Gagarin's travel into space, Google celebrated this extraordinary feat by a Google Doodle on its global homepage.

Yuri Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and honours, including Hero of the Soviet Union. Vostok 1 marked his only spaceflight, but he served as backup to the Soyuz 1 mission, which ended in a fatal crash.

Yuri Gagarin later became deputy training director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre outside Moscow, which was later named after him. Gagarin died when a training jet he was piloting crashed in 1968.

The Australian Space Alliance [ASA] was officially launched on April 12, 2011 to honor Yuri's historic flight. ASA provides a platform where people can share experiences, explore intellectual possibilities and connect with fellow rocketeers.
